Schapiro, Israel
(1882-1957)
   American bibliog-rapher, orientalist and librarian. He was born in Sejny, Poland. From 1907 to 1910 he taught at the Jerusalem Teachers Training College. He then emigrated to the US and in 1913 he was appointed head of the Semitic division of the Library of Congress in Washington; he also lectured on Semitics at George Washington University from 1916 to 1927. He left his post at the Library of Congress in 1944, and in 1950 he settled in Israel. He published studies of Jewish history and bibli-ography.
